What Is a Helical Gear
A helical gear is a cylindrical gear with teeth cut at an angle to the shaft axis rather than straight. Because the teeth mesh gradually, helical gears transmit power more smoothly and quietly than spur gears, and they can carry higher loads between two parallel shafts. However, the angled teeth produce axial thrust — unlike spur gears — so thrust bearings are usually required. Their main trade-off is higher manufacturing complexity and cost, which is why spur gears are often chosen for simple, low-speed drives.
They’re used in high-speed and heavy-duty machinery — from automotive transmissions and gearboxes to reducers, conveyors, pumps, and compressors.
