What Is a Bevel Gear
A bevel gear is a gear with teeth cut on a conical surface. It is used to transmit power between intersecting shafts, usually at 90 degrees. Unlike spur gears and helical gears, which transmit motion between parallel shafts, bevel gears can change the direction of rotation. Straight bevel gears are simple and cost-effective but noisier at high speeds; spiral bevel gears run more smoothly and quietly and are better for high-speed or heavy-duty drives. Their main trade-off is that they are more complex to manufacture than spur gears. They are widely used in differentials, gearboxes, reducers, hand tools, and industrial machinery.
