What Is a Spiral Bevel Gear
A spiral bevel gear is a bevel gear with teeth cut on a conical surface and curved in a spiral shape rather than straight. It is used to transmit power between intersecting shafts, usually at 90 degrees. Unlike straight bevel gears, spiral bevel gears mesh gradually, so they run more smoothly and quietly and can carry higher loads at higher speeds. Their main trade-off is that they are more complex and expensive to manufacture than straight bevel gears. They are widely used in automotive differentials, marine drives, industrial gearboxes, reducers, and other heavy-duty machinery.
